SPH Training Day

Supplementary to the workshop, a Training Day is offered on the 2nd of June, 2014 between 09:30 and 16:00. The training is most suitable for researchers who are familiar with the principles of SPH but are beginning their work in the field. More experienced SPH developers and users may find that the training day is a useful opportunity for sharing insights and ideas.

Training Day Content & Lecturers

Registration is scheduled from 09:30 to 10:00. The training day is structured into two parts:

Theory and Applications of SPH (10:00-12:30)

The morning session will consists of an introduction to SPH with emphasis on interpolation and on differential operator approximations (title: "SPH variants, particle Lagragian evolution, accuracy and conservation: links, strengths and difficulties"), given by Prof. David La Touzé (Ecole Centrale de Nantes, France). Moreover, a lecture on the modelling of sediment transport with SPH (title: "Monolithic approaches to erosional and sediment transport problems using SPH") will be given by Prof. T. Rung (Hamburg University of Technology).

Simulation and Postprocessing (13:30-16:00)

The afternoon session will be devoted to visualization and analysis of SPH data using the ParaView package. Topics will be demonstrated based upon practical examples in the open-source SPH solver DualSPHysics. Users will be introduced to the effects of different schemes in the SPH numerical method which can include choice of kernel, error and convergence, boundary conditions and formulation enhancements. This session will be organized by Dr. Benedict Rogers, with the assistance of Georgios Fourtakas (The University of Manchester, UK), and Dr. Alex Crespo, with the assistance of Jose Dominguez (University of Vigo, Spain).

All software and data sets will be made available for participants in a PC class room. The participants should bring their laptop and contact Alexis Hérault in order to download the relevant material in advance.
